IBEA has recently changed criteria and guidelines for the IBEA Scholarship Program. Watch the website for updates to be posted by January 31, 2017. Thank you!
The Dora J. Beattie IBEA Scholarship was founded in 2011. The IBEA Scholarship Fund was one of the beneficiaries of Ms. Beattie’s estate. Ms. Beattie requested that the funds be utilized to provide scholarships for those who wanted to pursue a career in business education in Illinois.
Ms. Beattie received her bachelor of science in education from Illinois State University and a Certificate of Advanced Study from Northern Illinois University. She taught business at Antioch Community High School and retired from there before moving to Rochester.
She enjoyed traveling and had been to all 50 states, the 7 continents, and 87 countries. She was a member of the Illinois Business Education Association, National Business Education Association, International Society of Business Education, and Illinois Education Association.
Ms. Beattie is remembered as a wonderful woman and teacher who kept the class interesting. She was well respected by her students and colleagues. Ms. Beattie’s generosity will impact the future of business education in Illinois for generations to come.
The award is to provide scholarships to students who plan to become secondary business teachers or further their professional development as business teachers. Up to four scholarships will be awarded each year. One scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior who will begin undergraduate studies in business education in the fall. Two scholarships will be available at the undergraduate level, and one scholarship will be available at the graduate level.
Currently, three $5,000 undergraduate scholarships and one $2,500 graduate scholarship will be awarded each year. The amount of the scholarship will be re-evaluated each year and based on the income from the scholarship investment fund.
Frequency of the Award
The scholarships will be awarded annually. Students can apply each year they are eligible and are eligible to receive the scholarship more than one time. Preference will not be given to a past scholarship recipient during the selection process.
